Today marks the 28th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The ADA is legislation that set out to ensure that people with disabilities enjoy equal access in all areas of public life. This includes equal access to jobs, schools, transportation and all places that are open to the general public. The ADA came about through joined efforts, and the advancement of home and community based services continue on through these united efforts. As we recognize the ADA and the freedoms it protects for people with disabilities, we also celebrate the shared right of all people to experience life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. People with disabilities are the largest minority group in the US, and includes individuals of all races, religions, genders, country origins, and socioeconomic status.

This anniversary week came with activism on full display as approximately 1,000 people with disabilities, disability advocates, and allies from across the nation joined together for the annual march to the US Capitol in Washington D.C. in support of disability rights. Priorities included protecting funding for Independent Living opportunities and home and community based services.

Our collective voice holds power and being seen and heard helps the ADA remain at the forefront. Consumer Direct will continue to advocate for equal access for all, and we look forward to engaging in our community for continued improvement.
